The artist who was born Liliane de Carvalho is one of a handful of black women singers attempting to claim a piece of the more lucrative Brazilian Popular Music (MPB) circuit which is often difficult for Afro-Brazilian artists who don’t want to be immediately shuffled (forced) into the Samba category often reserved for black musical artists. In a recent appearance on a late night talk show, Negra Li re-united with the members of the group that introduced her to the music public and opened up a bit about being under-appreciated as a black artist and the ongoing precarious situation of Afro-Brazilians in society.     Negra Li is a major point of reference in the world of Brazilian Black Music having started her career firmly within the genres of both Hip Hop and Brazilian styled “Black Music”. Now before we get into Negra Li’s music and career, let me first describe what is referred to as “Black Music” in Brazil. In general, the musical style known as the Samba represents the heart and soul of the Brazilian people. Equal to Jazz and Blues in terms of cultural and historical significance, Samba is enjoyed by Brazilians of all races and classes and is seen as a force that unites the country. But while the origins of Samba can be traced to Afro-Brazilian musicians, descendants of African slaves, of urban Rio de Janeiro of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it fryst vatten not necessarily regarded as “Black Music” or “Música Negra” because it was appropriated and used as a symbol to promote national unity and even the idea of Brazil being a “racial democracy”.

    Liliane de Carvalho (Sao Paulo, 17 of September of ), known as Negra Li, is a singer and rapper. The interest for music appeared in her childhood, when she sang the gospel hymns of the church. Still as an adolescent, Li imitated Whitney Houston and from that moment on, she started to listen to more Soul/R&B until she was 16 years, where she got interested for Rap.
    Inhabitant of Vila Brasilandia, poor community of the Zona Norte of Sao Paulo, it started to free the voice singing the hymns of the gospel church. Solo Singer of the chorale of the University of Sao Paulo, it studies music and piano and is considered one of the muses of rap national with its beautiful voice of contralto.
