Jon Scieszka was born on September 8, 1954, in Flint, Michigan, United States of America, his father coming from a family of Polish immigrants.
Having 5 siblings, all boys, mealtimes were an experience close to survival, his technique of getting his hands on something to eat was to make others have fun and take advantage of their moments of distraction… He always thought about becoming a writer. Being a jokester, his desire to write was influenced by Dr. Seuss’s funny books and by parodies from “Mad” magazine.

Before reading
Assess what students already know about biographies. Choose several to read and give students something specific to look and listen for. The books below are all very different in format and have varied approaches in their storytelling. Have students pay attention to the format, especially if you are going to follow up by having them do some writing themselves about a famous person.
