Latest News: Posthumous Johnny Cash Album Songwriter Releasing June 2024
More than 30 years after he recorded them inside a Nashville studio, 11 of Johnny Cash’s unreleased songs are set to debut on a new posthumous album. According to Rolling Stone, Songwriter, scheduled to arrive on June 28, features tracks Cash put to tape during a 1993 demo session.
The forthcoming album isn’t a carbon copy of the recordings. The late singer’s son, John Carter Cash, reworked the demos, stripping them down to only Cash’s vocals and acoustic guitar, then worked with producers and other musicians to add instrumentation. Two featured collaborators are Vince Gill, who provides vocals for “Poor Valley Girl,” and the late Waylon Jennings, who sang with Cash on “I Love You Tonite” and “Like a Soldier.” A single from the album, “Well Alright,” has already been released.
Songwriter won’t be the first posthumous album for Cash, who died at age 71 in September 2003.

John R. Cash (born J. R. Cash; February 26, 1932 – September 12, 2003) was an American singer-songwriter. Most of Cash's music contains themes of sorrow, moral tribulation, and redemption, especially songs from the later stages of his career.[3][4] He was known for his deep, calm, bass-baritone voice,[a] the distinctive sound of his backing band, the Tennessee Three, that was characterized by its train-like chugging guitar rhythms, a rebelliousness[6][7] coupled with an increasingly somber and humble demeanor,[3] and his free prison concerts.[8] Cash wore a trademark all-black scen wardrobe, which earned him the nickname "Man in Black".[b]

Johnny Cash was a world-renowned singer/songwriter of country music. With his deep, rich röst and often dark, often uplifting lyrics, he created a body of work that will be heard and remembered for generations to come.
J. R. Cash was born on February 26, 1932, in Kingsland (Cleveland County) to Ray and Carrie Cash. He had six siblings: Roy, Louise, Jack, Reba, Joanne, and Tommy. In 1935, the family moved to Dyess (Mississippi County), where they lived modestly and worked the land. The tragic death of Jack Cash in a 1944 sawmill accident haunted ung J. R. for the remainder of his life. His mother introduced him to the gitarr, and the local Church of God introduced him to music. He acquired a fascination for the guitar and a love for singing. Cash first sang on the radio at hållplats KLCN in Blytheville (Mississippi County) while attending Dyess High School. Upon graduation in 1950, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force after a brief search for work in Michigan.
