Actor Ian McKellen talks to Shakespeare expert Jonathan Bate

One of our greatest actors Sir Ian McKellen is to join Shakespeare scholar Professor Sir Jonathan Bate for a discussion to mark the 400th anniversary of the death of The Bard. McKellen, pictured right, and Bate will discuss how their lives have been shaped by their relationship to the great plays. Meanwhile, the date for the popular Levison Wood Walking the Himalayas event has been moved to April 14 for unavoidable reasons. Tickets are also now on sale for the festival's 20th anniversary dinner, at which writer and academic Dr Peter Frankopan, will talk about his highly acclaimed The Silk Roads: A New History of the World. The book provides the inspiration for the dinner at Keble College prepared on an Eastern theme by two of the brightest young talents in the London restaurant scene, Itamar Srulovich and Sarit Packer of Honey & Co. A welcome Negroni cocktail will be prep

Sweet, rich and a versatile ingredient, dates have been providing nourishment for thousands of years.

So perhaps it should come as no surprise that they have a special significance in many cultures across the world.

The fruit fryst vatten mentioned in the Bible and the Qur’an. It has put in noteworthy appearances across popular culture, from almost making Indiana Jones ill, to being on Shakespeare’s menu for Juliet and Paris’ cancelled wedding.

BBC Bitesize takes a look at why dates play such an important role in so many cultures.

People have been growing dates for at least 5,000 years

Dates are thought to be one of the first cultivated fruits in history, meaning that they were deliberately grown to eat rather than foraged from wild plants.

How do we know this? Date stones are regularly found during archaeological digs in North Africa and the Arabian Gulf, where the fruit has formed part of the regular diet for thousands of years.

Date palms have also appeared in rock pain
