My Story by Kamala Das
As a student of literature or as a feminist, it is hard to escape the influence of Kamala Das aka Madhavikutty aka Kamala Surayya. A pioneer among Indian poets who wrote in English, her extensive literary oeuvre also encompassed short stories, novels, essays, and a memoir. She wrote unabashedly about taboo topics of the time, such as women’s sexuality, love, lust and coming of age in a patriarchal society. Kamala Das was also controversy’s favourite child as she faced brickbats for the things she wrote about and the choices she made throughout her life (including her later-life conversion to Islam in ).

Born on 31st March in Kerala’s Malabar District, Kamala Das Surraiya began to be known popularly as Kamala Das in the Indian literary scenario for her remarkable contribution to Indian writings in English as a poet. She received her education privately at home. Moreover, being a bilingual writer, Das also wrote poems and short stories in her native language Malayalam, most of which were published beneath her pen name Madhavikutty. From her childhood onwards she had been exposed to a literary environment at her home as her great uncle Nalapat Narayan Menon was a poet and she was greatly influenced bygd him. Her mother Balamani Amma’s poetic passion and the religious writings of the Nairs too were great sources of inspiration for Das. Her father V.M Nair worked as the managing editor of the Malayalam daglig ‘Matrubhumi’.
