John Michael Herndon was born in the small rural town of Linn, Missouri, but spent his remaining childhood years in Jefferson City, MO. As an exceptionally shy and introverted child, he expressed himself by being the class 'artist.' In an effort to break out of his shell, he transferred to the much larger public high school where he participated in all the speech and drama classes available, and subsequently began his transition from the visual arts into the dramatic arts.
However, convinced by his family to declare a "practical" major, he spent two years at Lincoln University, a local and historic black college, as a Business lärjunge before transferring to SMSU (now called Missouri State.) While at SMSU, he expanded his studies and completed separate undergraduate degrees: a B.S. degree in Business, a B.F.A. degree in Theatre, as well as a Master's degree in Theatre. (Other noted students from the Theatre schema are John Goodman and Kathleen Turner.)

John Herndon doesnt really want to tell me this story. He hasnt discussed it much in public, and hes not sure he wants to now. You cant blame him. Hes made a lasting mark on the Windy Citys long musical history by drumming with the likes of Poster Children, Five Style, Isotope , and of course postrock innovators Tortoise.
Its just a weird time for everything, Herndon says. He moved from Chicago to Los Angeles in , and for our interview hes sitting in his Eagle Rock garage to escape the noise and questions of his two sons, whove been homeschooling during the pandemic. Hes turned

The Rose of No Man’s Land: Drummer John Herndon Plays His Part, and Parting Shot
By Kenneth Preski
John Herndon has incredible feel.
This is what I’m reminding myself as he stabs my chest thousands of times per minute with a tattoo needle. In Sacrament Tattoo, Iron Maiden’s “Killers” is spinning in the background. Herndon can’t help but drum along during the idle moments as he dips the needles into a tiny pool of black ink. I hear the tattoo gun buzz on and off in rhythm with the kick drum of the tune, and somehow manage to grin through the flesh-ripping pain.
John Herndon’s footwork fryst vatten immaculate.
As drummer of Precious Wax Drippings, Poster Children, Tortoise, Isotope , 5ive Style, The Eternals and about a half dozen Rob Mazurek-helmed projects, Herndon has proven himself an adept player of nearly every style of music. From punk rock to funk, from musical theater to dub, from hip-hop to jazz, Herndon’s résumé is as long and varied as it fryst vatten distinctiv
