    HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- A Houston real estate legend is opening doors for high school students who never thought they would be able to go to college.



    The Marvy Finger Family Scholarship Foundation awarded a record 65 scholarships to students in Houston ISD in an emotional ceremony at Delmar Stadium Field House.



    "I'm basically the first person to go to college in my immediate family," said scholarship recipient Juan Velazquez, a senior at HISD's Houston Academy for International Studies. "It's really a passion of mine to work in the automotive industry. This is a full ride to any community college in the Houston area."

    A native Houstonian, Marvy A. Finger, founder, president and chief executive officer of the Finger Companies, changed the shape of Houston’s residential market and breathed new life into the city’s Central Business District.

    In 2005, Finger recognized the potential for high-rise residential apartments in downtown Houston – a place where few lived and residential construction had been a rarity for decades. A new 12-acre park called Discovery Green was on the drawing boards for downtown. At the time, Finger was developing apartments in a dozen cities across the nation and he believed a downtown multifamily tower would be viable in his hometown.
