Landscape and seascape painting must be the most popular art genre. Like all painting genres there are many good examples and some exceptional examples of such paintings. In today’s blog I want to highlight the exceptional landscape work of the nineteenth century Danish painter, Peder Mork Mønsted, who due to his naturalistic plein-air depictions, was considered the foremost landscape painter of his day in Denmark.

Mønsted was born on December 10th, , a few years following the end of what was known as Den danske guldalder (The Danish Golden Age). This period of Danish history straddles the first half of the nineteenth century and is a period of outstanding creative production in Denmark. Peder Mørk Mønsted

Peder Mørk Mønsted was a Danish realist painter. He is best known for his landscape paintings.

Mønsted was born at Grenå, Denmark. He was the son of Otto Christian Mønsted and Thora Johanne Petrea Jorgensen. His father was a prosperous ship-builder. At an early age, he began to receive painting lessons at the art school in Aarhus. From to , studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts with Niels Simonsen and Julius Exner. In , Mønsted studied under the artist Peder Severin Krøyer. In , he spent some time in Rome and Capri then, the following year, visited Paris, where he worked in the studios of William Adolphe Bouguereau.

In , he went to Algeria. Three years later, he travelled to Greece, where he was a guest of King George I who had been born a Danish prince. While there, he also did portraits of the Greek royal family. After that, he visited Egypt and Spain.

Beginnings & Education

Though born a few years after the &#;golden era&#; of Danish painting, Mønsted was undoubtedly a product of that era. As with many other &#;natural born&#; artists, he showed an early inclination for painting. This was then slipad by his education at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts ( &#; ). His works bära the influence of artists such as Julius Exner and William Adolphe Bouguereau; in , Mønsted spent some time working in Bouguereau&#;s studios in Paris.
